Evelyn Apoko
World Peace Youth Ambassador, Uganda
Age 25

Evelyn Apoko is a Ugandan youth who, at age 12, was abducted from her family at gunpoint by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), the extremist Christian militia movement led by Joseph Kony. The children abducted by the LRA rebels were sometimes beaten, forced to kill, made to steal, sexually abused and treated as slaves. The atrocities Evelyn witnessed were unspeakable. One day, while she was washing clothes, a plane flying overhead dropped a bomb nearby, killing the woman and baby next to her and severely injuring Evelyn’s face.

When the rebels came later to carry the wounded back to camp, they left Evelyn to die in the grass. However, she managed to survive and get back to the rebel camp - only to be ostracized for her appearance. On the brink of being killed by the rebels, Evelyn escaped to a rehabilitation center in Northern Uganda, barely making it out alive.
Your money is helping to support these types of rehabilitation centers
The center helped Evelyn and other child soldiers like her recover their humanity and identity. They reunited Evelyn with her family, who she thought had been killed by the LRA.

In 2005, Evelyn began a series of trips to the United States to undergo reconstructive surgery on her face.  When she returned to the United States for more surgeries in 2009, she connected with the Amala Foundation, beginning a long and impactful involvement with the Austin, Texas based international youth leadership organization.

Evelyn has attended every Amala Foundation Global Youth Peace Summit since 2010, most recently serving as a Counselor-in-Training. She has also attended all three of Amala’s One Village Walks inside San Quentin Prison and has been heavily involved in the Amala year-long One Village Project and Camp Indigo.

Over the last two years, Evelyn has become an advocate and voice for children who have been abducted by armies and militias across the world. She has appeared on CNN, Oprah, and other major news outlets. Just last year, she testified in front of Congress, which led to the passing of a resolution that will help to protect children who have been abducted by the LRA.
“I grew up in a world of bloodshed, fear and tears. Today, I am inspired beyond words and look forward to working with young people and women who are experiencing war, because I want to show them that there is a way to build a world without violence. I strongly believe that no child was born to become a rebel and that we are all teachers for one another. I trust that if we support the next generation to experience the peace that begins within, the peace in the world will follow.”

Jeetan Khadka
World Peace  Youth Ambassador, Bhutan/Nepal
Age 24

Jeetan Khadka, a former Bhutanese refugee who resettled in Burlington, Vermont in 2008, is a very engaged and active youth who believes in the power of the youth voice to make this world a better place in which to live, love, and grow. Born in Bhutan, Jeetan’s family fled to Nepal when he was one and lived in a refugee camp there for 17 years. Lacking basic needs during his upbringing, Jeetan developed an understanding of different walks and struggles in life early on and became inspired to become a youth advocate and international social worker.

Now a Young Adult Navigator at Spectrum Youth & Family Services in Burlington, Jeetan works with transition-age youths. His mission there is to empower at-risk teenagers, young adults, and their families to make and sustain positive changes through prevention, intervention, and life skills services.

After graduating High School, Jeetan served two years as an AmeriCorps volunteer with the Burlington School District and Community & Economic Development Office (CEDO). During his service, he successfully worked on various community development projects and initiatives. Currently, he serves on Burlington Parks & Recreation commission and on the Governor’s State Standing Committee for Child, Adolescent, and Family Mental Health.

Jeetan was the recipient of the 2012 Herb Bloomenthal Award for Community Activism and the Young Adult Leadership Award through the State of Vermont Youth In Transition program.

As a former refugee, Jeetan is very connected to refugee and immigrant communities in the area. His favorite position by far is being an advisor to Diversity Rocks Youth Group, a group of youth and young adults who have come to Vermont as refugees and immigrants. Diversity Rocks has won two national awards for its youth empowerment video "I Am the World."

“I am thrilled and humbled to be joining the World Peace Caravan as a Youth Ambassador. I have lived 17 years of my life in a refugee camp, and during those horrifying times, somebody cared for, educated, and protected me. Now, I am free and it is the time for me to give back. Though my life in the camp wasn’t the best, it was very meaningful to me. It taught me the true purpose of life. Without that struggle, I wouldn’t have learned that valuable lesson.”

Jeremiah Mungai Mwangi
World Peace Youth Ambassador, Kenya
Age 23

After the post-election violence that ravaged Kenya in 2007 and 2008, Jeremiah Mwangi relocated with his family to Vumilia, a camp for internally displaced people (IDPs) whose name, appropriately, means perseverance. One of 350,000 IDPs currently living in Kenya, Jeremiah is building peace in his country through the connection of sports and music. His soccer team is currently working to spread peace as they interact with teams from neighboring villages and camps. Jeremiah’s vision to promote peace throughout his country and the world is to begin by helping his fellow youth find forgiveness in their hearts.

We Are The World Lyrics "We Are The World" was written by Richie, Lionel / Jackson, Michael.

There comes a time when we hear a certain call
When the world must come together as one
There are people dying
And its time to lend a hand to life
The greatest gift of all
We can't go on pretending day by day
That someone, somewhere will soon make a change
We are all a part of God's great big family
And the truth, you know,

Love is all we need [Chorus]
We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So lets start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
Its true we'll make a better day
Just you and me

Send them your heart so they'll know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
As God has shown us by turning stones to bread
So we all must lend a helping hand
[Chorus]
When you're down and out, there seems no hope at all
But if you just believe there's no way we can fall
Let us realize that a change can only come
When we stand together as one[Chorus x2]
